A lucky penny helped Lauryn Prather of Greenville capture the girls single title at the Greenville tennis tournament on Friday.
Prather played with the penny in her shoe as she downed Savanna Raissez of Paris, 6-3, in the finals. Prather also beat Raissez 6-4, 6-1 earlier in the double-elimination format.
Prather, who did not lose a set all day, is a transfer from Wills Point, where she played on a district championship girls doubles team last season.
Connor Mulkey of Greenville reached the finals of boys singles before falling to Kyle Bawcum of Paris.
Russell Coker and Marc Bawcum from Paris claimed the boys doubles title by an 8-3 margin over the Greenville Lions' team of Colin Doby and Jordan Henderson.
Kendall Vogt and Maddye Adkins won an all-Paris final in girls doubles, downing teammates Lauren Hodgkiss and Sarah Trapp.
The Terrell team of Joshua Huff and Alason Payne captured the mixed doubles title with a 6-4 victory over the Paris team of Barbara Torres and Russell Coker.
This was the only tennis tournament scheduled at home this spring for the Greenville Lions and Lady Lions, who are coached by Nathan Choate.
They're preparing for the District 13-4A tournament that is set for April 12-13 at Texas High in Texarkana.
