GREENVILLE -- National record-holder Henry Neal and two other former Greenville Lion athletes will be the new members of the Greenville High School Athletic Hall of Honor.
Neal, Harry Bond and Doug Hooten will be recognized in pre-game ceremonies for the Lions’ game against Frisco Liberty at 7 tonight at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium in Greenville. They’ll be officially inducted into the Hall of Honor during the GHS athletic banquet in the spring.
Neal still holds the national high school record in the 100-meter dash with his time of 10.15 seconds set at the state meet at Austin in May, 1990. It was one of four Class 5A state track and field titles won by Neal, who also claimed the 100-meter dash (10.3) in 1989, the 200-meter dash (20.46) in 1990 and the triple jump (48-8) in 1990.
Bond and Hooten were members of the Lions’ 1960 district and bi-district champion football team. That was the only Lion football team to make the state playoffs for 35 years.
Bond was a three-year lettermen in football and in basketball and was a key member of the Lions’ 1960-61 district championship basketball team.
Bond lettered three years in track and field and attended Arlington State.
Hooten was an all-district running back for the Lions and a three-year letterman.
He lettered two seasons in basketball and two in track and field.
He attended college at Oklahoma State, Texarkana Junior College and East Texas State.
Hooten also served in Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal.
