ROYSE CITY -- Cobbie Johnson continued a Greenville tradition when he won the triple jump during Tuesday's first day of competition in the District 13-4A track and field meet.
Johnson leaped 45 feet 9 1/4 inches to win the triple jump by more than two feet over teammate Genesis Stephenson (43-2 3/4).
Greenville triple jumpers have won district, regional and state titles in both the boys and girls divisions in the past. Greenville's Henry Neal, who attended the meet on Tuesday, was the first high school triple jumper in state history to top the 50-foot mark when he soared 50-9 in 1990. Greenville's LaToya Phelps held the state triple jump record in the girls division for a time at 42-8 1/4.
Johnson also led the qualifying in the 200-meet dash at 21.86 seconds. He was a district champion in the 100 and 200 as a sophomore in 2009.
The Greenville Lady Lions picked up a point in the shot put with Mackenzie Cooper's sixth-place finish at 31-10 1/2, which is a career best.
Host Royse City picked up a first and two seconds in the field events. Joseph Beck won the pole vault, clearing 12-0. Teammate Chris Doyle was second at 11-6.
Damion Foster was also second in the boys shot put with a toss of 48-2 3/4.
Jennifer Dyer of Royse City was second in the girls 3200 meters with a 12:41.95 time.
The meet resumes today with the long jump, discus and high jump competitions beginning at 10 a.m.
The running finals start at 3 p.m. at Royse City ISD Stadium.
