The Greenville Lady Lions picked up their first District 13-4A softball victory, 5-4 over the Denison Lady Yellow Jackets on Friday at Monty Stratton Field.

"We played great," said Greenville coach Jennifer Rickman. "The pitcher pitched great."

Lady Lion pitcher Rachael Cook limited Denison to only five hits. Cook did not walk a batter and fanned one.

Greenville struck first in the first inning as Chelsea Rigsby singled, Arian Alford walked and Sidney Tippit doubled home Rigsby.

The Lady Lions made it 2-0 in the third as Tippit doubled home Alford.

Denison scored two runs in the top of the fourth as Alicia Tanguma and Kelsey Langford singled and Ashley Craig reached first on an error by the Greenville third baseman.

The Lady Lions countered with a run in the fourth then as Vanessa Rico and Megan Shaw walked and then Katie Threndyle singled to drive in Rico.

Denison added two more runs in fifth off two infield errors and Kelsey Langford's single.

Greenville tied it in the fifth as Alford singled with two outs and Tippit hit her third double of the game.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Lady Lions produced the game-winning run in the seventh. Rigsby tripled. Cook slapped a grounder between the Denison pitcher and first baseman. The pitcher threw to home but Rigsby beat the throw to end the game.

The Lady Lions, now 9-10 for the season and 1-6 in district play, travel to Sherman Tuesday to take on the Lady Bearcats.

Denison claimed the junior varsity game, 12-0.
