Qualin Hayden banked in 22 points, while Tyrell Richmond pumped in 18 to lead the Sherman Bearcats to a 66-48 victory over Greenville on Thursday, spoiling the Lions' season finale.
Greenville seniors Anthony Miller and Blake Taylor were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
Sawyer Harmon banked in 13 points, while Taylor pumped in 10 and Dartannon Wilson added nine for Greenville, which fell to 7-23 overall, 3-9 in district play.
It was close through the first three quarters. It was 12-12 after one quarter and Sherman led 30-29 at halftime. Greenville scored the first six points of the second half but Sherman then went on a 14-0 run to end the third quarter with a 44-35 advantage.
The Bearcats outscored Greenville 22-13 the rest of the way to up its season record to 12-19 and district mark to 5-7. The Bearcats needed to win this game and get some help from Sulphur Springs to keep its playoff hopes alive.
"I'm proud of the seniors," said Lions coach Marcus Smith. "They gave me 110 percent every day. We didn't shoot the ball well tonight, but we made most of our free throws. The first quarter through the third quarter we played hard and took care of the basketball. In the fourth quarter we faltered.
"Overall this year has been a learning experience for our young team. The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy," said Smith, quoting the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
