West Mesquite spoiled Greenville's home basketball opener on Saturday evening, handing the Lions an 83-36 loss.

Greenville stayed within range in the first half despite a slow start but was outscored 21-6 and 31-10 over the last two periods.

"That first quarter got us and that third quarter," said the Lions' coach Marcus Smith. "We started off too slow. I was proud of the defense the first half."

The Lions' defense helped them stay within 31-20 for the first half.

"The second half we got tired, either that or we kept turning the ball over and lost our desire to play defense," said Smith.

Greenville went scoreless for the first 6:40 to trail 11-0.

West Mesquite, which stayed undefeated at 2-0, spread its scoring around among Braylon Rayson (13 points), Jerome Lyles (13), Trey Seville (12), Tyrone Davis (11) and Nate Davis (10).

Dartanon Wilson paced the Lions with 10 points. Ladarrien Davis and Marquise Taylor both added six points and Sawyer Harmon and Kenneth Neal both pitched in five points.

Greenville, which opened with a 65-45 loss on Tuesday to Marshall, dropped to 0-2 for the season.
