Lions drop opener
November 18, 2010

MARSHALL -- A slow start haunted the Greenville Lions in a 65-45 loss to Marshall in the 2010-11 season basketball opener on Tuesday night.

"We got down 2-9 and looked up and we're down 2-12," said Lions coach Marcus Smith. "They were real big, athletic and quick. Tonight we just had too many turnovers but they never gave up. They worked hard and got the lead down."

Greenville trailed 20-8, 41-18 and 60-28 after the three quarters but outscored the Mavericks 17-5 in the fourth quarter.

Marshall converted 33 Greenville turnovers into 28 points.

Matt Holmes led the Mavericks and all scorers with 17 points. Fred Johnson added 10 points.

Kenneth Neal paced the Lions with 10 points. Ladarrien Davis and Dartanon Wilson both added eight.
