FRISCO -- Frisco Liberty's offense was as good as advertised as the Redhawks rolled to a 59-14 victory over the Greenville Lions on Thursday night.
The Redhawks, who outscored Denison 56-20 last week, stayed undefeated at 2-0. The Lions dropped to 0-3.
Liberty running back Jay Ajayi, who has verbally committed to Boise State, dashed for 186 yards on 12 carries though getting pulled from the game midway through the second quarter. Ajayi scored on runs of seven, three, three and one yard, upping his season touchdown total to 10.
Liberty's starting quarterback Zach Smith went 5-of-8 passing in the first half for 56 yards, including scoring tosses of six, two and 19 yards to receiver Cameron Brown.
Liberty went into halftime leading 56-7 after outgaining the Lions 354-51.
Wide receiver Devonte Green scored Greenville's lone touchdown in the first half with a 19-yard reception off a Jeffro Davis fade pass. Green, also an all-district basketball player, outjumped two Liberty defenders in the end zone.
Green's catch capped a 50-yard, seven-play drive by the Lions that included a 24-yard run by Anthony Davis and a 15-yard personal foul penalty against the Redhawks.
The Redhawks scored on their first eight possessions, driving 45, 65, 48, 17, 47, 31, 19 and 47 yards for touchdowns.
The Lions hurt themselves with seven fumbles in the first half, losing three of them.
Liberty running back Ben Battiste also ran in from the three for a touchdown in the first half. Battiste finished with 94 yards on 11 carries.
With Ajayi still out of the game, Liberty took the second half kickoff and drove from its 47 to the Lion 20 before settling for Connor Hirt's 36-yard field goal.
Greenville scored again in the final second on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Jeffro Davis to Shay Sellers. Zakery Halverson booted his second extra point. Anthony Davis helped the 44-yard drive along with a pair of 15-yard runs. The Greenville running back finished with 68 yards on nine carries. Lajorian Harris added 45 yards on 15 carries and Jeffro Davis was 2-of-12 passing for 21 yards.
Liberty, which substituted liberally, wound up with a 391-132 advantage in total yards. |
