Lions fall to Frisco Wakeland in soccer playoffs

ROCKWALL -- Frisco Wakeland kept steady pressure on the Greenville defense to outscore the Lions 5-0 in a Class 4A area soccer playoff match on Monday.

Wakeland, now 22-2-3 for the season, advances to the sectional round to face either Frisco or Sulphur Springs.

The Lions, who earned their playoff berth with a third-place finish in District 20-4A, finished the season with a 6-5-6 record.

Greenville’s defense kept the Wolverines out of the goal for the first 15 minutes though Wakeland got off about seven shots, including several close misses.

Wakeland’s freshman midfielder Hayden Partain finally broke through for the game’s first goal with 24:47 left in the first half. Partain got to a deflected shot and booted in the rebound.

Aaron Reifschneider, a senior defender, gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead at the half when he fired in a shot from 28 yards with 8:51 left in the first half.

Chris Gutierrez had the Lions’ most promising opportunity in the first half but sent a shot from 15 yards just over the crossbar.

Jimmy Irwin, Michael Ramirez and Len Smith scored for Wakeland in the second half.

Wakeland’s defense ranks among the top in the Metroplex in Class 4A, allowing an average of only 0.3 goals per game.
