GREENVILLE -- Greenville’s Lions jumped out to a 4-0 halftime
lead and then cruised to a 6-0 District 20-4A soccer victory
over Princeton during Tuesday night’s home finale.
The Lions, who have a district game remaining on Friday in
Commerce, upped their season record to 5-4-6 and district mark
to 4-2-3, keeping them in line for a playoff berth.
“It’s a win,” said Lions coach Jeff Crank. “They had fun. They
really did try to be unself but at the same time they did want
to get their goals.”
Six different Lions scored as Greenville took 32 shots, with
19 on goal. Princeton finished with only one shot on goal as
goalkeeper Luis Torres got the shutout without being tested.
Ryan Wilhelm scored unassisted for the Lions’ first goal less
than two minutes into the contest.
Homero Pineda made it 2-0 with another unassisted goal early
in the first half.
Carlos Najera upped the Lions’ advantage to 3-0 when he scored
on a penalty kick with 15:16 left in the first half.
Oto Franco gave the Lions the 4-0 halftime lead on a goal with
8:18 left in the first half.
Evan Snider didn’t waste any time at the start of the second
half, scoring inside the first minute.
Chris Gutierrez wrapped up scoring later in the half to make
it 6-0.
Najera was credited with two assists.
There was no junior varsity game and there won’t be on on
Friday at Commerce, where the varsity-only match starts at 6.
