Freeman leads Lions at Royse City track meet

ROYSE CITY -- Durant Freeman claimed two firsts and three seconds to lead the Greenville Lions to fourth place in the team standings on Saturday at the Royse City track and field meet.

Freeman, who claimed the high point individual award, leaped 42-11 1/4 inches to win the triple jump and ran second leg on the Lions’ victorious 4x100-meter relay team that clocked a time of 44.04 seconds. Freeman also leaped 21-1/2 to finish second in the long jump and ran a 22.67 for second in the 200-meter dash. Freeman also ran second leg on the Lions’ 4x200-meter relay team that clocked a 1:33.37 to finish second to Terrell.

Joining Freeman on the Lions’ 4x100 and 4x200 relays were Alton Dennis, Desjuan Morgan and Dijoun Sheppard.

Greenville scored 90 points to finish behind Sulphur Springs (137), Rockwall (127) and Terrell (102).

“I thought they did pretty well this week,” said Lions coach Ivory Dillard. “Especially without a lot of practice. I thought it was a good outing.”

Greenville’s Jessica Franklin, who finished third at state last season in the triple jump, finished second in three events to lead the Lady Lions to seventh place in the girls team standings. Franklin, who underwent knee surgery in December, went 34-11 1/2 for second in the triple jump, 17-1 for second in the triple jump and clocked a 15.98 for second in the 100-meter hurdles.

The Lady Lions scored 36 points to finish behind Rockwall (138), Rockwall-Heath (119), Terrell (90), Dallas Samuell (85), South Garland (57), and host Royse City (37).
