GREENVILLE -- Katelynn Twilley booted the game-winning goal
and also produced a heads-up play at the end of the game as
the Greenville Lady Lions downed North Lamar 2-1 in district
soccer on Monday night.
After Megan Schroeder of North Lamar tied the game at 1-1 with
27:12 left in the first half, Twilley put the Lady Lions up
for good by scoring an unassisted goal with 15:24 remaining.
Schroeder scored her goal off an assist from Kara Erickson.
Greenville went into the half leading 2-1 and protected that
lead during the final 45 minutes as goalkeeper Ellen Robins
recorded some key saves.
Twilley, while back on defense, also kept the ball away from
North Lamar by booting it out of bounds with about 10 seconds
remaining. The Pantherettes could not inbound the ball before
time ran out.
Greenville coach Ron Beck called it a “very good win.”
“For the last two years, for one reason or another, we haven’t
been able to put them away,” he said. “So tonight we got a big
monkey off our back.”
The Lady Lions, now 6-3 for the season, stayed undefeated in
District 20-4A play at 2-0.
North Lamar, which opened district play with a victory over
crosstown rival Paris, dropped to 5-5-4 and 1-1.
Emma Hollingsworth put the Lady Lions up 1-0 with 30:13 left
in the first half when she scored following a long pass from
Bailey Phillips.
Greenville wound up with a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Emelie Kilgore manned the goal for the Lady Lions in the first
half. Robins took over for the second half.
North Lamar captured the junior varsity match, 4-0.
The Lady Lions will be back in action tonight at Paris,
starting at 7 p.m.
