Lady Lions open district soccer with win

GREENVILLE -- Greenville’s Lady Lions opened District 20-4A
soccer play with a 2-0 victory over the Sulphur Springs Lady
Wildcats on Tuesday night at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.
The match was originally scheduled for Monday in Sulphur
Springs but was moved to Greenville because of wet conditions.
Katelynn Twilley put Greenville on the scoreboard first with
29:40 left in the first half when she scored on a penalty kick
after getting brought down in the goalkeeper’s box. Twilley
booted the kick into the lower right corner of the net.
Bailey Phillips added a final goal with 6:45 when she booted
in a shot following a deflection. Sulphur Springs’ goalkeeper
went down on the play with an injury.
Greenville wound up with a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal as
Greenville goalkeeper Ellen Robins finished with six saves.
“Ellen played a great game tonight,” said Lady Lions coach Ron
Beck.
Twilley led the Lady Lions’ shooters with three shots on goal
and Meg Lawson finished with two shots on goal.
Greenville improved to 5-3 with the victory over a Sulphur
Springs team that is now 9-3-1.
“They played awesome tonight,” said Beck.
“That’s a great way to start district,” he said.
Greenville’s Lions battled Sulphur Springs in the second game
of the doubleheader.
The score was 0-0 at halftime.
