GREENVILLE -- Greenville’s Lady Lions opened District 20-4A soccer play with a 2-0 victory over the Sulphur Springs Lady Wildcats on Tuesday night at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.

The match was originally scheduled for Monday in Sulphur Springs but was moved to Greenville because of wet conditions.

Katelynn Twilley put Greenville on the scoreboard first with 29:40 left in the first half when she scored on a penalty kick after getting brought down in the goalkeeper’s box. Twilley booted the kick into the lower right corner of the net.

Bailey Phillips added a final goal with 6:45 when she booted in a shot following a deflection. Sulphur Springs’ goalkeeper went down on the play with an injury.

Greenville wound up with a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal as Greenville goalkeeper Ellen Robins finished with six saves.

“Ellen played a great game tonight,” said Lady Lions coach Ron Beck.

Twilley led the Lady Lions’ shooters with three shots on goal and Meg Lawson finished with two shots on goal.

Greenville improved to 5-3 with the victory over a Sulphur Springs team that is now 9-3-1.

“They played awesome tonight,” said Beck.

“That’s a great way to start district,” he said.
