GREENVILLE -- Greenville’s Lady Lions suited up just seven
players for Saturday’s District 10-4A basketball game in the
Lions Den against Newman Smith of Carrollton.
But the Lady Lions still claimed a 52-33 district victory to
square their 10-4A record at 2-2. They are now 11-7 for the
season.
Though the Lady Trojans had a four-player advantage in
substitutes, the visitors still couldn’t keep pace in the
second half with Greenville. Greenville, which led only 20-18
at halftime, stepped it up in the second half to outscore
Newman Smith 12-6 and 20-9 in the final two quarters.
Senior Olivia Carter registered a double-double to lead
Greenville with 26 points and 22 rebounds. Carter dominated
inside to score all 12 of her buckets in the paint.
Sha’Kia Whetstone, who also had a big game inside the Lady
Lions, finished with 14 points and five rebounds.
Freshman MacKenzie Cooper chipped in six points, seven
rebounds and six assists for the Lady Lions and Shanterria
Riley also tossed in six points.
Aubrey Tucker, LaBrandi Mayberry and Arian Alford also suited
up for the Lady Lions but did not score.
Mary Cris Vogt topped Newman Smith with 11 points and Sharika
Nash added 10.
Newman Smith dropped to 5-11 for the season and 1-3 in
district play.
