Lady Lions advance to Quinlan tournament finals

QUINLAN -- Greenville’s Lady Lions beat Community 46-40 and Edgewood 36-30 on Friday to advance to today’s championship game of the Quinlan Ford Roundball Roundup tournament.

The Lady Lions, who stayed undefeated at 5-0, will face Crandall at 2:30 p.m. at Ford High School after Crandall outscored host Quinlan Ford, 88-40, in the semifinals on Friday.

“They’re playing pretty well,” said Lady Lions coach David Sanders. “We’re missing a lot of easy shots. We’ve got to get better from the (free throw) line.”

Senior Olivia Carter pumped in 16 points to lead the Lady Lions to the victory over a Community team that is now 4-1 for the season. Sha’Kia Whetstone also pumped in 10 points and secured some key rebounds.

Community led 17-9 after the first quarter but freshman MacKenzie Cooper hit a big 3-pointer at the end of the first half to pull the Lady Lions up into a 21-21 tie by halftime. Greenville then outscored Community 15-8 in the third quarter to grab a lead it would not relinquish in the second half.

Kasey Poovey sparked the Lady Braves with 16 points and Tiffany Dale added nine.

Greenville then took care of Edgewood in the semifinals, holding the Lady Bulldogs to single digits in each of the last three quarters.

Freshman Maddy Crabtree sparked the Lady Lions with 13 points in that game and Carter finished with eight.

Emily Atkins pumped in 27 points to lead Crandall to its victory over Quinlan Ford. Haily Jenkins and Kacie Byford both added 12 points.

Ro Russell topped Ford with nine points.

Ford will face Edgewood in the third place game at 1 p.m.

Lone Oak advanced to today’s 11:30 a.m. consolation finals with a 36-32 victory over Bonham.

Chelsey Lyday topped Lone Oak with 12 points, 14 rebounds and three steals. Rachel Hammon added nine points and Andi Moore managed four assists and three steals.
