Two Lions head all-district soccer selections

Matt Mouer and Denim Douglas not only anchored Greenville’s defense but also helped the 12-7-2 Lions win the District 20-4A soccer title.

The two seniors were rewarded for their efforts by earning two of the top honors on the all-district team.

Mouer, who recorded 118 saves, shared the most valuable player award with North Lamar’s senior forward Zach Johnson. Mouer’s goal against average was 1.35.

Douglas, a co-captain who played in all 21 of the Lions’ games, earned the defensive MVP award.

Greenville’s Jeff Crank, who directed the Lions to the district championship, earned the coach of the year honor.

Greenville also put five players on the first team with senior midfielder Jonathan Arellano, junior midfielder Ryan Wilhelm, sophomore defender/midfielder Evan Snider, senior midfielder Christian Zaquez and senior forward Luis Serrato. Wilhelm led the Lions for the season with eight goals and Arellano was Greenville’s assist leader with six.

Greenville sophomore defender Carlos Najera made the second team along with freshman defender Emerson Flores.

Commerce senior goalkeeper Kevin Felts and senior midfielder Jake McCarty were selected to the first team.

Commerce senior Joey Farquhar and senior midfielder Jared Turner made the second team.

Ariel Tempra, a senior forward from Paris, captured the offensive MVP honor.

The newcomer of the year award went to Sulphur Springs sophomore midfielder Fernando Arellano.
