Highland Park runs away with district track titles

ROYSE CITY -- Highland Park ran away with the girls team title, while the Scots also claimed the boys championship in a close battle at the District 10-4A track and field championship at the Royse City ISD Stadium.

Due to a 3 1/2-hour delay caused by lightning, the meet didn’t finish until after midnight on Thursday. The meet was suspended at about 8:30 p.m. with only three events remaining and then restarted at 11:50.

Highland Park picked up a first, a third and a sixth in the 1600-meter run and then won the 4x400-meter relay to outpoint Royse City 128-119 1/2 to claim the boys team title. Greenville was third with 101.

A botched final exchange in the 4x100-meter relay cost the Greenville Lions in the team race. The Lions were leading by more than five meters in that race and would have scored 20 points if they’d held on for the victory.

The Lions also lost out on some points when one of their top sprinters jumped the gun in the 100-meter dash preliminaries and was disqualified.

Highland Park won all three relays, plus the 1600, 3200 and 200 dashes and the long jump on the way to staking up 201 1/2 points in the girls team race. Royse City, led by Megan Frausto, finished second with 125. Frausto won the 400 (58.15) and 800 (2:22.74) dashes, plus the triple jump (39-1). Frausto was second in the long jump (18-11 3/4) and brought Royse City’s 4x400-meter relay team up from sixth to second on the final leg.

Skyler Strahm also helped the Lady Bulldogs with a victory in the high jump (5-2).

Greenville’s Lady Lions collected victories from Sha’Kia Whetstone in the shot put (32-7 1/2) and Jessica Franklin in the 100-meter hurdles (15.42).

Cobbie Johnson of Greenville won the boys 100 (11.19) and 200 (22.29) dashes and Dijoun Sheppard captured the 110-meter hurdles (15.16).

B.J. Farrar won the 400-meter dash for the Royse City boys (51.01) and also ran a leg on the Bulldogs’ victorious 4x200-meter relay team (1:30.75).

Royse City also picked up two victories in the field events with Brock Wempa in the shot put (51-3 1/2) and Cameron Nichols in the triple jump (43-1 1/4).

The top three finishers in each event will advance to the Region II-4A meet at Denton in two weeks.
