GREENVILLE -- Richardson Berkner is the team to beat at the
Greenville Lady Lions’ softball tournament that starts today
at Monty Stratton Field.
That’s the word from Greenville coach Glenn Banker, whose Lady
Lions will face Lakeview Centennial this morning and then
Dallas Bryan Adams in the afternoon.
Other teams in the tournament include Richardson and Celeste.
“Berkner’s the favorite, then Centennial and then probably
us,” said Banker.
Berkner currently ranks in a three-way tie for second place in
District 9-5A with a 5-2 league mark. richardson ranks sixth
in that same district at 1-5. Lakeview Centennial is sixth in
its District 10-5A with a 1-5 mark.
The Lady Lions are fifth in District 10-4A with a 2-5 record
after falling 12-0 on Tuesday night to Rockwall. Rockwall
pitcher Laycee Holcomb fired a one-hitter. Trinity Ashmore
managed Greenville’s only hit.
Shelby Frierson powered Rockwall with a grand slam homer.
Kayla Mayes made a big catch for Greenville in right field,
near the outfield wall.
Banker also praised the defensive work of Shelby Doederlein.
“I was real happy with Shelby behind the plate,” he said.
Celeste’s Lady Devils won in their last outing on Tuesday,
outscoring Fannindel 29-10.
