Baseball Lions drop two games in two days

Greenville’s Lions managed only five hits and one run in a pair of baseball losses on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Lions dropped a 15-1 District 10-4A decision to Highland Park on Tuesday at Scotland Yard in University Park.

Highland Park jumped out to a 12-0 lead off three Greenville pitchers in the first inning and then cruised to a win in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Jake Howeth led the Scots with two hits, including a triple, and three runs batted in.

Four Highland Park pitchers combined on a three-hitter. The Scot pitchers struck out seven.

Miguel Saavedra singled and scored for the Lions in the first inning on a fielder’s choice.

Wade Prigmore also singled in the first and Brad Ratliff singled in the second.

Greenville collected only two hits in a 4-0 non-district loss to Paris on Wednesday in Greenville.

Saavedra ripped a one-out triple for the Lions in the first but was left stranded.

Rafael Sanchez singled for the Lions in the third.

Greenville left seven runners on base against Paris, including two in the seventh.

Paris’ pitcher walked two and struck out six.

Greenville pitchers Ethan Hackney, Saavedra and Wade Prigmore allowed nine hits to Paris and two walks with eight strikeouts.

The Lions are scheduled to play again at home at 7 p.m. Friday against District 10-4A rival Royse City.
