Highland Park spoils Lions season finale

GREENVILLE -- Highland Park spoiled the Greenville Lions’ season finale 66-28 on Tuesday night and set up a playoff game with Newman Smith for the top spot in District 10-4A.

Highland Park, ranked 18th in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A rankings, will play No. 4 Newman Smith at 6 p.m.Friday at Moody Coliseum in Dallas. Highland Park upset Newman Smith 52-45 on Friday night at Highland Park to knock the Trojans out of the No. 1 spot in the state rankings.

The visitors jumped out to 18-0 lead against Greenville before Chase Wofford hit a 3-point basket for Greenville with 20 seconds left in the first quarter. The Scots led 18-3 after one.

Highland Park outscored the Lions in the other three quarters to up its season record to 23-5 and district mark to 13-1.

The Lions finished at 6-22 and 2-12.

Highland Park’s Max Malone banked in 16 points to lead all scorers. Tucker Robinson pumped in 11 for the Scots and Daniel Edwards added 10.

Devonte Green chipped in nine points to lead the Lions. Wofford finished with six points.

Greenville coach Earl Claiborne said the Lions are building something slowly, but surely.
