Lady Lions' season ends with playoff loss

PRINCETON -- Haley Texada fired in 20 points to help the Frisco Lady Wolverines pull away for a 52-43 bi-district playoff victory over Greenville on Monday night.

Texada hit four buckets inside and four from 3-point range as the Lady Wolverines improved to 23-10 for the season and advanced to the area round against either A. Maceo Smith or Lincoln from Dallas.

The Lady Lions, who picked up 16 points and 10 rebounds from Olivia Carter, finished the season with a 14-13 record.

“We had them two different times and they went on a scoring spell and we went on a dry spell,” said Lady Lions coach David Sanders.

Sanders noted that that was the difference between a team that had prior playoff experience and one that didn’t.

Wakeland went three rounds in the Class 3A playoffs last season before moving up to 4A.

Greenville closed the first quarter strong with a couple of buckets from Jessica Franklin to go up 14-10.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth for much of the second quarter before Wakeland closed with an 11-2 run to go up 27-20 at halftime.

Greenville opened the third quarter with buckets from Rocio Medrano and Ashley Abbott to pull to within 27-24 but Texada hit three 3-pointers to give Wakeland a 38-26 advantage.

Wakeland got up 48-33 and 50-35 in the fourth quarter but the Lady Lions wouldn’t give up. Myneshia Crow nailed a 3-pointer and Medrano banked in two shots to bring the Lady Lions to within 50-43 with 2:23 remaining.

“But we never quit hustling,” said Sanders.

The Lady Lions wouldn’t score again and Wakeland’s Kristina Clemons added two free throws with 41 seconds left to pad the final margin.

Franklin finished with eight points to go with three assists. Medrano contributed seven points and 11 rebounds. Crow wound up with six points and three assists and Abbott added six points and four steals.

Jackie Patterson, Jasmine Patterson and Khristina Clemons all chipped in eight points for Wakeland.
