GREENVILLE -- Four goals.
That was the winning margin for the Greenville Lady Lions in
their District 20-4A soccer opener against Sulphur Springs on
Monday night at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.
The Lady Lions collected two goals from Katelynn Twilley and
one each from Bailey Phillips and Julie Hernandez as they won
4-0.
Goalkeeper Guadelupe Alvarez protected the shutout with some
diving saves.
“Lupe had a good game,” said Lady Lions coach Ron Beck.
“Pretty much everybody on the team had a good game tonight.
“It was a physical game,” he said. “I thought that the ref did
a good job of calling it tight, settling it down.”
It took only two minutes for the Lady Lions to grab the lead
on Phillips’ goal.
Twilley made it 2-0 with a penalty kick after one of the Lady
Lions was fouled in the goalkeeper’s box.
Hernandez stretched the lead to 3-0 with 52 seconds left in
the first half off an assist from Emma Hollingsworth.
Twilley booted in a deflected shot with 36:32 remaining to cap
scoring.
Sulphur Springs stepped up its play during the final five
minutes but was turned away by Alvarez on several diving
stops. Alvarez finished with five saves.
The Lady Lions squared their season record at 5-5-1 and stayed
undefeated at home with a 2-0 record.
Sulphur Springs captured the junior varsity match, 2-0.
