Royse City pulls out win over Lions

GREENVILLE -- Stephen Edwards hit a 3-pointer with 10.7 seconds left to tie the game and then scored the first bucket in overtime as the Royse City Bulldogs pulled out a 71-63 victory over the Greenville Lions on Thursday night in the Lions Den.

Royse City rallied from a 43-37 deficit entering the fourth quarter to tie it at 58-58 with Edwards’ 3-pointer, which sent the game into overtime.

Royse City then outscored the Lions 13-5 in overtime as Greenville went the first 3 1/2 minutes of the bonus period scoreless. Greenville trailed 68-58 before Jarel Nelson broke the scoring drought for the Lions with a 3-pointer with 30.5 seconds remaining.

Edwards wound up leading Royse City and all scorers with 28 points. Scotty Arterberry also tossed in 14 points for the Bulldogs and Wynn Posey added 10.

Corey Bosworth, who was 6-of-7 from the line, led the Lions with 20 points and Nelson fired in 19. Nelson pumped in four three-pointers for the Lions and was 5-of-6 from the line.

Greenville went 17-of-20 from the line while the Bulldogs were 19-of-31, including 7-of-12 in overtime.

Royse City led for much of the opening quarter at 8-4, 10-6, 16-10 and 18-14.

Bosworth and Dijoun Sheppard hit free throws in the final 46.44 seconds to send the Lions ahead into halftime at 27-25.

Manon Steward and Aaron Johnson scored inside for the Lions as they built a 43-37 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Greenville dropped to 5-18 for the season and 1-7 in District 10-4A play.

Royse City improved to 11-12 and 3-5.

Thursday’s game was a makeup date caused by the ice storm that blew in on Tuesday.

Both teams will be back in action tonight. The Lions face No. 2 state-ranked Newman Smith tonight in Carrollton while the Bulldogs will entertain Rockwall-Heath.
