Lady Lions open 2009 soccer season

MOUNT PLeASANT -- Greenville’s Lady Lions opened the 2009
soccer season with a 5-0 victory over John Tyler on Thursday.
Katelynn Twilley, Brenda Hernandez, Bailey Phillips, Sydney
Phillips and Maci Bradford all scored goals for the Lady Lions
and Julie Hernandez and Megan Warren added assists.
Goalkeeper Lupe Alvarez recorded the shutout. She had one
save.
“It was a great game to watch,” said Lady Lions coach Ron
Beck. “This is the best I’ve seen them play.”
Greenville’s junior varsity beat Liberty-Eylau 1-0 on a goal
by Meg Lawson and lost 5-0 to Longview Pine Tree.
The Lady Lions lost their first game on Friday to Mount
Pleasant, 4-0, and then tied Hallsville 1-1 in the second
game.
Greenville lost a player to a red card for an inadvertent
handball in the Mount Pleasant loss, which left the Lady Lions
a player short for most of the match.
“We didn’t really recover from the red card,” said Beck.
Bailey Phillips scored Greenville’s goal against Hallsville on
a corner kick that deflected off the Hallsville goalkeeper.
Alvarez, in the goal, finished with four saves for Greenville.
Greenville wound up second in pool play and will play North
Lamar at 9:45 a.m. today in consolation action.
