GHS cager earns all-district honors

GREENVILLE -- All-district selection Corey Bosworth figures highly in the plans of Greenville basketball coach Earl Claiborne for next season.

“I’ve just got to redefine my offense to get him more shots,” said Claiborne.

Bosworth, a 6-0 junior, was the only Lion named to the All-District 10-4A team. Bosworth, who averaged 12.7 points per game, earned second-team honors.

Claiborne called Bosworth an “outstanding kid to coach.”

The Lions, who returned only one player from the previous team, battled inexperience throughout the season to finish at 3-26 for the season and 0-14 in district play.

However, they’re expected to return a strong nucleus including three players who made the honorable mention list for 10-4A: 6-5 sophomore Cal Crabtree, 6-1 sophomore Alton Dennis and 5-11 junior Jarel Nelson.

Claiborne said other coaches in the district noted that the Lions should be much improved next season.

Highland Park and Richardson Pearce claimed most of the top honors on the all-district team. Troy Alexander of Highland Park and Bryan Parker from Pearce shared the most valuable player award.

David Phieler of Highland Park and Marc Johnson from Richardson Pearce shared the coach of the year award.

Trevoy Dunn of Pearce earned the defensive player of the year award and the newcomer honor went to Pearce junior Bruce Smith.

Terrell’s stellar shooter Antwain Thomas captured the top offensive player award.
